Highest daily COVID-19 cases in 2 years as Omicron fuels the surge

China has registered its highest rise in the daily Covid-19 case count since the initial outbreak at the beginning of 2020. Mainland China has reported more than 1,500 locally transmitted fresh infections. This case search which is mainly fueled by the omicron variant has prompted the authorities across cities to further tighten the measures.

Several cities have taken measures like canceling group events, launching rounds of math testing, and canceling offline classes in schools. Cities in the Julian province are scrambling to build makeshift hospitals to take in the Covid-19 cases which is one of the hardest-hit regions. Meanwhile, the province dismissed the mayor, and the district head in the capital city of Chiang Chon amid the surge.

Fresh restrictions are back in the city. It's home to a population of 9 million. Under the latest imposed curbs residents are required to stay at home with only one family member permitted to venture out to buy food and other essential items every two days. They must undergo three rounds of mass testing.

All non-essential businesses have been declared shot, and transport links remain suspended. Authorities in Shanghai have stepped up targeted lockdowns and testing to halt the highly transmissible omicron variant.

Disneyland Resort in the city of shanghai decided to limit the number of visitors and to allow visitors only with a negative antigen test report. One of China's biggest and oldest trade fairs in the southern province of Guangzhou. The canton fair has been temporarily shot after one of the visitors was found to be infected with the virus.
